The All Blacks Experience

Opened in 2019, this experience is based at at the Sky City Precinct in Auckland and is designed to give you the most in-depth appreciation of what it is like to be a New Zealand All Black.

The experience itself is a 90 minute state-of the art guided encounter that showcases the All Blacks through the latest innovation and technology. This full sensory and interactive experience allows New Zealanders to celebrate and understand New Zealand’s rugby heritage, achievements and culture.

We thought the best way to highlight the best parts of the experience was to take the words of  Ed Burak, the All Blacks Experience designer as to what her thought the top  highlights are for visitors:

  1. The Haka – take in the full force of the Haka through a 4 metre high screen experience that draws you in from the first moment. As close as you will come to facing the real thing.
  2. Test your rugby skills – In a hands on interactive zone you’ll be able to match your kicking, passing, lineout and accuracy skills against those of actual All Blacks – and discover where your talents truly lie.
  3. New Zealand’s Rugby Story – you’ll immerse yourself in the history, culture and people that have made the All Blacks such an icon in New Zealand and the world
  4. Legends of the Game – Hear directly from past and present legends of the game and discover their stories, moments and matches.
  5. Performing under pressure – through the use of technology and innovation you will get insights and direction from coaches and players to understand what it is like to perform under pressure in a high performance team
  6. Black Ferns, Maori All Blacks and All Blacks Sevens – this experience is not just about the All Blacks – but a homage to all those that wear the black jersey and represent New Zealand with dignity, strength and skill to be the best of the best.

Rangitoto Island Return Ferry

Sail out to one of the most iconic landmarks in the Hauraki Gulf - Rangitoto Island, and spend the day exploring.

Rangitoto erupted from the sea approximately 600 years ago in a series of dramatic explosions. Two episodes 10 to 50 years apart are thought to have lasted for several years each. This makes Rangitoto the youngest island in the Hauraki Gulf and the last and largest volcano to be formed in the Auckland volcanic field.

Exploring Rangitoto is a fantastic day adventure. A gentle climb through lava fields will lead you to the summit in approximately one hour. Allow extra time to explore the lava caves on the way back, or see the historic bach community near the wharf.

Ferry takes approximately 25 minutes from downtown Auckland.

Experience catching brown trout or salmon fishing on Lake Mapourika’s calm scenic water.  The beauty of Lake Mapourika can be enjoyed by everyone on this comfortable fishing charter boat, which is fully covered for fishing in all weather conditions.  Your knowledgeable fishing guide Dale is passionate about fishing and has been trout and salmon fishing in the region for over 15 years.

Sit back and unwind while trolling silently past 900 year old Kahikatea trees, or spot feeding White heron while you wait for a nibble on the line!

Lake Mapourika is part of the wild sea-run salmon spawning route from the Tasman sea in the lake via the Okarito river.  Introduced lake salmon are present all year round, however the West Coast salmon fishing season runs from October to March 31st annually.  Luckily, here you can fish for brown trout all year.

A fishing charter is one of the best things to do in the rain in Franz Josef, and the trout fishing can be excellent on wet days.

Experience Provider: Float Culture

Build peace, mindfulness and complete physical relaxation into your lifestyle with Three 60 minute float sessions at Float Culture Auckland

What is Floating? Floatation involves lying in a super-saturated Epsom-salt solution about 30cm deep. The salt water solution is heated to skin temperature 35.5C. Once you are settled, it is almost impossible to tell which parts of your body are in the water and which aren’t. The high density of the saline solution will make you feel completely weightless, letting every single muscle in your body fully relax. The float pods are specifically designed to block out all external distractions, such as sights, sounds, tactile sensations and gravity.

Why Float?

  • Muscle relaxation: Float to release muscle tension, flush lactic acid, promote muscle growth, relieve pain and recover faster.
  • Creativity & Mindfulness: Float to unlock the power of your mind – creativity, super learning and powerful recall.
  • Fast-acting stress relief: Float to rest, relief stress, pain and depression or simply improve wellbeing.

Each Floatation session includes:

  • 60 minutes in the pod.
  • 30 minutes to take a shower before and after the float.
  • Bath towel provided.
  • Skin care products are available for use after the float
Whale Watch Tour

Experience Provider: Whale Watch Kaikoura

Whale Watch is New Zealand's only vessel based whale watching company offering an exciting up-close encounter with the world's largest toothed predator the Giant Sperm Whale. See the whales in their natural environment at all times of the year, boasting a 95% success rate!

The main focus of your tour is to locate and view the Giant Sperm Whale. Whale Watch average between 1 to 2 whale sightings per tour due to the length of time the whales can stay submerged. The whales form loose pods, keeping several miles between each other, so viewing any more than 1 to 2 whales per trip is a real bonus.

Around 80% of the world’s whale and dolphin species migrate past our coastline so at any given time there is the opportunity for other species of marine mammals to be sighted such as Blue, Fin, Sei, Humpback, Minke, Pilot, Orca and Southern Right Whales, Common Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Southern Right Whale Dolphins, Elephant Seals and Leopard Seals.

Depending on the amount of time available after viewing the Sperm Whales, the captain of the vessel may decide to move in along the coastline and see what other types of marine life can be encountered. This could include Dusky and Hector Dolphins and the New Zealand Fur Seal.

Kaikōura is also home to around 75% of the world’s pelagic sea bird species which include Wandering and Royal Albatross, Mollymawk Albatross, Petrels, Shearwaters, Prions, Fulmars, Gannets, Terns and Herons.

Throughout your tour there is an onboard visual presentation, “World of the Whales” – an experience that takes passengers “virtually” to the bottom of the Kaikōura undersea canyon. The presentation also provides information for a variety of marine life found in Kaikōura waters.

Designed specially for whale watching, the modern catamarans are equipped with engines that minimise underwater noise and toilets that never pollute the sea. The main passenger cabin is enclosed and large outside decks offer great viewing and photo opportunities. Passenger numbers for each tour are kept well below vessel carrying capacity to ensure your tour experience remains a personal one.

The ultimate 4WD adventure that puts you in control. Buckle up and take on an off-road adventure deep into native New Zealand forest. The tracks that the pioneers used back then are the same tracks that you will be diving on today. Rugged and remote, the trail is full of unknowns with plenty of thrills along the way.

With instruction from a professional guide, you can tackle terrain made for 4WD adventures. Tight, twisting bends, deep muddy holes, a seven metre-high luge, steep climbs and thrilling descents – this is uncharted territory with challenges that come thick and fast.

Feel the need for speed as you jump into the driver’s seat for an exhilarating Raceline Karting experience. Concentration, skills and a big dose of brave, make the most of the world-class karting track and give it all you’ve got.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

James from Chuffed has visited Off Road NZ at least 20 times in the last 15 years - with his wife, visiting friends and family, groups of friends....the Go Karting never fails to impress. Part of it's charm is it's remote location on a 125 hectare farm 25 minutes drive into the hills from Rotorua.  The fun is addictive, and the competitive spirit against yourself and your friends comes to the fore. So when Chuffed was born - Off Road NZ was one of the first calls James made to see if they wanted to be a partner. And lucky for everyone they said yes.

Experience a mysterious underground world with a guided cave tour past the rushing water of an underground stream before drifting in silent darkness beneath the luminous shimmer of hundreds of glowworms.

Your trip to the Te Anau Glowworm Caves begins with a cruise to the western shores of Lake Te Anau on purpose-built scenic cruise vessels.

At the entry to the caves at Cavern House, view the informative displays and learn about this geological wonder before you join your guide underground. On the tour of the caves, your friendly guides will point out the highlights and share their knowledge of the caves and its history.

This underground world is astonishingly beautiful. By geological standards, the caves are very young (12,000 years) and are still being carved out by the force of the river that flows through them. The result is a twisting network of limestone passages filled with sculpted rock, whirlpools and a roaring underground waterfall.

Deep inside the caves, beyond the roar of the water, you will be taken by small boat into a silent hidden grotto inhabited by hundreds of glowworms, unique to New Zealand. In the subterranean darkness, they produce a glittering display that is nothing short of extraordinary.

Discover Stewart Island from the water on a leisurely cruise of beautiful Paterson Inlet and a guided walk in Ulva Island Wildlife Sanctuary.

The cruise will showcase some of Paterson Inlet’s stunning scenery with its hidden coves and unspoilt beaches. You’ll hear fascinating stories of early Maori history and European settlement from your guide as we pass various landmarks. Your guide is passionate about this area, provides informative commentary and is more than happy to answer questions. While on board, keep a look out for fur seals and penguins – we see a lot of them around this area.

Paterson Inlet is home to renowned wildlife sanctuary Ulva Island and you’ll stop there for a 45 minute guided walk. The island is home to weka (native woodhen), bush robins, rare saddlebacks and yellowheads amongst other species. It is also a protected habitat for some of New Zealand’s rarest plant species. A regular highlight is to encounter an inquisitive weka on the beach.

For the remainder of the cruise around Paterson Inlet, relax on board our modern catamaran and enjoy the coastal scenery before heading back to base.

Ulva Island/Te Wharawhara

The island sanctuary is located within Paterson Inlet (Whaka a Te Wera) and offers the opportunity to view rarer native species including weka, kākā, kākāriki, tūī, bellbirds (korimako), pigeons (kereru), fantails (piwakawaka), tomtit (miromiro) and brown creeper (pīpipi).

The saddleback (tieke), yellowhead (mohua), Stewart Island robin (toutouwai) and rifleman (titipounamu) have all been successfully reintroduced to Ulva Island. Some lucky visitors to the sanctuary have also seen the Stewart Island brown kiwi (tokoeka) during the day.

Ulva Island is part of the Rakiura National Park and covers an approximate 269 hectares which are mostly managed by the Department of Conservation.

The island, which has no permanent human population, is supported by the Ulva Island Charitable Trust, a group of Stewart Islanders, who raise funds for research, maintain the tracks and infrastructure, and help with bird releases.

At dusk depart from Stewart Island's Halfmoon Bay in a catamaran for a cruise across Paterson Inlet to Little Glory Cove. During the cruise pass Ulva Island (a predator-free sanctuary) and learn about Stewart Island's rich history. Once at Little Glory Cove, disembark onto a wharf at the southern part of the peninsula known as The Neck.

The walk, led by your nature guide, is on a well-formed track across the peninsula, through spectacular coastal forest to a secluded sandy beach.

As dusk sets in and daylight diminishes, venture by torchlight through the native forest with the stars and forest night sounds around you. The walk will take about 45 minutes one-way and the track emerges on to Ocean Beach.  This wide sandy beach is where kiwi are often found feeding among the grasses and seaweed.

Here in the darkness you will get to see the Southern brown kiwi (Rakiura Tokoeka) - often searching for food.

Afterwards retrace your steps through the forest to Little Glory Wharf for your catamaran ride back to Oban township on Stewart Island.

Includes:

  • Scenic evening cruise across Paterson Inlet
  • Experienced nature guide
  • Guided walk (approx. 2 hours)
  • Complimentary tea & coffee on board

About Rakiura Tokoeka/Southern Brown Kiwi

The Rakiura Tokoeka is found on Stewart Island. They stand approximately 40cm tall, weigh 4kg and their beak is 18-20cm long. Stewart Island tokoeka are stocky round birds and one of the largest variants of the Southern brown kiwi, with females reaching weights of over 4kg. Tokoeka means "weka with a walking stick" which references their long beak.

Important information

A reasonable level of fitness is required (total walking time approximately 2 hours depending on kiwi behaviour). The walking track can be uneven and muddy at times, therefore please ensure you wear adequate footwear and are dressed for warmth including a wind and waterproof jacket.  On occasions we may need to cancel a trip due to weather - please ensure that you provide contact information, so that we can keep you updated.

This experience aims to discover wild kiwis in their natural habitat. While you have a higher chance of finding them with our expert staff, wild animals are unpredictable, and there is no 100% guarantee kiwis will appear. Their rareness, their wild nature, and the thrill of searching are what makes the experience special and enjoyable, so we cannot offer refunds if there is no sighting.

Cruise from Picton, up through the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound to historical Ship Cove. Along the way your skipper will provide a commentary on the surrounds, history and the wildlife be it bird, fish or mammal!

As the name would suggest the highlight of this tour is a 30 minute stopover at Ship Cove. Named by Captain James Cook in 1770 when his ship The Endeavour anchored here to replenish supplies of food, water and wood. It became a favourite anchorage of Captain Cook and he returned here a further four times between 1770 and 1777.

Take the opportunity to dabble in the creek where Captain Cook made home brew for his crew and share the beach with the resident wildlife. Have your photo taken beside the Captain Cook Monument commemorating his visits to this area or just relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

Upon re-joining your vessel cruise via Endeavour Inlet to view Furneaux Lodge and Punga Cove Resort before returning to Picton.

Experience Provider: Pohatu Penguins
Pohatu is the largest Australasian Little Penguin colony on mainland New Zealand where this family owned business has worked over the last three decades protecting White-flippered Penguins, Canterbury's own variant of Australasian Little Penguin, from introduced predators.
This is a wonderful option for people who wish to take part in the monitoring program and discover more, in depth, about the conservation efforts. This gives you great insight into the life of a penguin and the chance to see the birds up-close and a unique opportunity to watch them socialising on the water.
After a breathtaking scenic drive over Akaroa extinct volcano and photo opportunities you will discover tranquil Pohatu Bay where you will set off for a walk around the colony to monitor nesting sites and make sure that the Little Penguins are doing well. Then, you will have the unique opportunity to spot some undisturbed from hidden hides, socializing on the water with provided binoculars and telescope.
With night falling there is a high likelihood to see some penguins returning to shore and relaxing on the rocks before heading to their nests. As they have to walk so far to feed chicks you will leave before dark and leave them in peace.
In addition, tours booked late November to February may have the opportunity to see up-close rehabilitation efforts such as feedings and swim therapy.

The tour includes:

  • 4WD transportation from Akaroa by 4WD minibus to and from Pohatu bay on some of Banks peninsula back country road,
  • Welcome by rare sheep breeds that can be hand fed,
  • A conservation walk and talk within the penguin habitat,
  • Monitoring of penguin nesting homes to check on the colony,
  • With camouflage gear and through binoculars and scope, watch penguin(s) in the middle of the bay, preening, resting and socialising,
  • A likelihood of some birds coming ashore just under the hides as it get darker

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

We love this business. This is an exemplar  of how, when done well tourism is such a powerful force. Pohutu Penguins is a family run business with a long standing history of protecting the Little Penguin in Pohatu Bay. When Shireen and Francis Helps first started their penguin conservation work the penguins faced massive challenges via predation by rats, cats, ferrets and stoats. The colonies around Bank's Peninsula were disappearing at an alarming rate.

Through predator trapping, monitoring, rehabilitation and creating awareness the Pohutu Colony stabilized and has now grown into the largest colony of Little Penguins  on mainland New Zealand. Today, the conservation work continues, and the tourism business has created jobs, raises marine conservation awareness and in short is simply a fantastic story!

The team at Natures Wonders don't feed the wildlife, and the wildlife is not subjected to tagging, handling or any form of testing. This is as real as it gets when it comes to wildlife habitats.

This tour suits all ages, and a low level of fitness is required.

Experience Provider: Rotorua Canopy Tours

TripAdvisor declared Rotorua Canopy Tour's Ultimate Experience the 11th best experience in the world in 2021. That's pretty high praise!

You need to allow yourself 3.5 hours to experience this activity which is surprisingly suitable for almost everyone.

After meeting at their base on the outskirts of Rotorua where you meet you guides who ooze professionalism and fun times, you'll be transported up to a magical forest that appears to have been lost in time. You'll immediately be struck with how you feel as you are transported to another world full of amazing trees, ferns, smells and noise.

Perhaps the most impressive feat by the team at Canopy Tours is over the past 10 years they have removed all the possums and rats from this once unloved and forgotten slice of New Zealand forest and restored it to a pest free environment - so much so that you can spot many bird species and in an amazing highlight of the experience, even handfeed wild robins.

The experience consists of 6 ziplines for a total of 1.2 kilometres. They vary from shooting you through tight gaps in the forest layer to giant swooping flights through deep forested valleys. There is even a 400 metre tandem line so you can race you partner... but this tour is so much more than an adrenaline rush.

In addition there are a number of suspended bridges that span wide valleys, floating staircases and one of the highlights - the 50 metre high cliff walk - that appears seemingly out of no where as you arrive perched high on it after a zipline flight out of the forest canopy.

It's a truly special experience, suitable for anyone with a okay level of fitness. It operates in all weather but does suspend operations when high winds exist.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Started in 2008 by two pioneering Kiwi mates who had a vision of delivering a mind blowing forest experience using a series of ziplines, swing bridges & elevated platforms, Rotorua Canopy Tours was recently ranked the #1 nature activity IN THE WORLD by Tripadvisor! Praise doesn't get much higher than that. Not only is this a beautiful & thrilling forest experience, it is also environmentally responsible & educational. A portion of every ticket sold goes to the restoration of the native NZ forest that the tour runs in. You arrive as a stranger & leave as a part of the story of the impressive conservation efforts that have taken place here!

Original Canopy Tour

In 2021 TripAdvisor, the world's largest traveller review site named Rotorua's Original Canopy Tour the #1 Nature Activity in the WORLD. Thrilling visitors since 2012 with its unique combination of adventure tourism and conservation this is a experience you will not forget.

Located deep in an ancient native forest only 15 minutes from Rotorua, that has been painstakingly restored over over the last 10 years, into a safe haven for native birds and creatures you'll traverse this magnificent environment via a series of walking trails, suspended forest bridges and ziplines. It's a truly magnificent experience. If you're lucky you'll even handfeed wild native birds.

Soar through the trees and experience New Zealand’s ancient forest like never before. Step back in time in this native forest and come face to face with towering trees and native flora untouched for centuries in one of the most intact native eco-systems you’ll find anywhere in New Zealand. Immerse yourself in this breath-taking country the way it once was and hear the beautiful birdsong of New Zealand native birds including Tuis, North Island Robins, Kereru and Tomtits in their natural habitat.

Embark on a network of ziplines, swing bridges, cliff-walks, tree top platforms and more which journey deep into 500 hectares of ancient forest. A uniquely intimate experience, each tour has a limit of 10 people, meaning more time with your guides who are highly trained to keep you safe, make you smile and teach you amazing things as they bring the forest to life.

It’s an adventure that puts you at the heart of the forest restoration story, with every ticket purchased contributing to conservation efforts. To date, 220 hectares of the Dansey Road Scenic Reserve have been restored by removing thousands of predators. Together with their customers they have brought the forest back to life and created a forest eco-sanctuary for birdlife to flourish.

Equal parts inspiring, fun and educational, this award-winning adventure is a must-do adventure activity perfect for all ages. Lose yourself on this engaging encounter with the natural world and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Hot Tub Soak

You get your own tub for your party, no interruptions or rowdy swimmers with you – great! The 12 tubs are secluded and set outside amongst the tree ferns, with optional umbrellas over the tub to shade you from the sun or rain. At night you soak in a magical setting of lanterns amongst the beautifully lit surrounding native bush.

Oh, and what goes well with a hot tub soak after a big day’s adventure? A nice cold craft beer or cider or refreshing beverage of your choice. Just like a journey to our favourite hot stream in the bush, there's built in lots of cool little surprises for you to discover on your visit to Secret Spot. After showering and changing in brand-new cedar facilities, and picking up your flax kete (basket) with craft beverage of your choice, you head down the boardwalk through the ferns to find your secluded hot tub next to the Waipa stream. Relax, share the stories from your day’s adventures, and connect with nature.

Commencing on a elevated stargazing observation deck you will learn to recognise several constellations and bright stars using a green laser pointer.  Then, use the walk-in Pipehenge observing frame to learn how the stars and planets move in the sky and how the great New Zealand Maori and Polynesian voyagers used them for navigation across the Pacific Ocean.

You will continue with the professional 14" Celestron CGE Pro 1400XLT telescope in the rotating 3.5m (11') astronomy dome. View a range of objects including the moon, stars, planets and galaxies depending on availability on the night of your visit. Children can operate the dome rotation during the astronomy tour to give a clear view of the NZ sky.

Back at reception you will have ample time to examine and handle several 4½ billion year old meteorites and learn about the history of the classic Spitz A2 planetarium projector currently undergoing restoration and how it is used. There are several unique hands-on displays about things astronomical, geological and scientific including 150 million year old dinosaur bones. The astronomy tour concludes with a walk through a 25m scale model of the Solar System.

A hot drink is provided while stargazing to ward off the evening chill and a detailed information pack including a sundial kit is supplied to enable you to further your astronomy interests at home!

Experience Provider: River Rats

Join the crew from River Rats for a guided kayak trip to the spectacular Manupirua Springs Hot Pools. Paddle across scenic Lake Rotoiti to this amazing spot which is only accessible by water.

Situated right on the lake edge, there are a range of hot pools of varying temperatures all fed from a natural hot spring. Have a leisurely soak while your guide cooks an appetising Kiwi BBQ dinner. After dinner enjoy a sunset paddle across the lake and a visit to the glow worm caves.

Paddling time is usually around 1 hour each way.

There is no minimum age for kayaking, children may be able to go in the front of a double kayak if accompanied by a competent adult. With young children the adult will need to be able to paddle a double kayak without the assistance of the child and the child needs to have the patience to sit in the front of the kayak. Generally around age 5 is a good guideline but feel free to discuss this with River Rats if you have any questions regarding this.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

The River Rats crew have been providing world class natural experiences on the rivers & lakes around Rotorua for over 20 years. They acknowledge their work relies completely on the natural environment in which they operate in, and have put measures in place every step of the way to ensure this is respected & cared for for future generations. They have committed to a raft (pun intended) of environmental pledges along the way, including sponsoring predator free Okere Falls, running their own conservation week annually, and committing to being carbon neutral by 2025! For an inspirational experience in a stunning natural environment, with responsible hosts, look no further!

Ever dream of flying?

Now you can!

iFLY Queenstown is NZ's only indoor skydiving attraction based in central Queenstown.  iFLY creates a smooth, wall-to-wall cushion of air on which anyone can safely float - no experience necessary. Simply lean into the airflow and that's it - you're flying!

You'll have an instructor by your side through the whole experience - they will give you an orientation on the basics of flying so you can get the most out of your flights. Once you've been briefed you'll receive your full flight gear which includes a helmet and flight-suit.

Once in the wind tunnel, your instructor will be right by your side providing personal instruction and will be able to demonstrate new skills as you improve.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

We think this is a really fun activity that is suitable to so many people. While it's not the same as climbing in an aeroplane and jumping out from 15,000 feet - not everyone wants to do that - so we think this is a perfect sweet spot. And who knows....maybe this will inspire you to take on a real skydive! Alex and Tayla from Chuffed visited iFLY in 2021 and had a ball!

Experience Provider: Beachcomber Cruises

Your adventure will begin as you cruise north from Picton on a boat through the drowned river valleys of the Queen Charlotte Sound and past idyllic bays. As you head towards Ship Cove the skipper will talk about the history, geology, flora and fauna of the area and – if there is time- you'll get closer to any passing wildlife, including dolphins who like to play in the wake of the boat.

In the 1770s, sheltered Ship Cove provided safe anchorage, food, water and timber for explorer Captain James Cook and his ship crews on five separate occasions and saw some of the earliest sustained contact between Maori and Europeans.

There is plenty of historical information at Ship Cove before you climb away from the beach through native forest regenerating beneath a high canopy of trees. The forest includes manuka, kanuka, five finger and tree ferns and is home to many native New Zealand bird species: tui, fantails, silvereyes and tomtits. If you stop for a break, a curious weka may come to check you out.

When you reach Tawa Saddle, stunning views of the Queen Charlotte Sound spread out before you. The track then drops into Resolution Bay and follows an old bridle path into Endeavour Inlet.

Furneaux Lodge at the head of the Endeavor Inlet is your destination. Here you can buy drinks and meals and relax before boarding your cruise vessel at approximately 4-4.30pm for your return to Picton. Arriving back at approximately 5.30-6pm.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Beachcomber Cruises exemplify everything we look for in a partner business! Family owned & operated, with three generations of family often seen at the office at a time. Mind you, walking into their office on the Picton waterfront, you would be forgiven for thinking the whole team are family, such is the strength of the family values behind the business! Also, did we mention how stunning the backyard is? The ultimate way to see one of NZ's great 'backyards' is with Beachcomber Cruises!
