Experience Provider: Rotorua Canopy Tours

In 2021 TripAdvisor, the world's largest traveller review site named Rotorua's Original Canopy Tour the #1 Nature Activity in the world. Thrilling visitors since 2012 with its unique combination of adventure tourism and conservation this is a experience you will not forget.

Located deep in an ancient native forest only 15 minutes from Rotorua, that has been painstakingly restored over over the last 10 years, into a safe haven for native birds and creatures you'll traverse this magnificent environment via a series of walking trails, suspended forest bridges and ziplines. It's a truely magnificent experience. If your lucky you'll even handfeed wild native birds.

Soar through the trees and experience New Zealand’s ancient forest like never before. Step back in time in this native forest and come face to face with towering trees and native flora untouched for centuries in one of the most intact native eco-systems you’ll find anywhere in New Zealand. Immerse yourself in this breath-taking country the way it once was and hear the beautiful birdsong of New Zealand native birds including Tuis, North Island Robins, Kereru and Tomtits in their natural habitat.

Embark on a network of ziplines, swing bridges, cliff-walks, tree top platforms and more which journey deep into 500 hectares of ancient forest. A uniquely intimate experience, each tour has a limit of 10 people, meaning more time with your authentic Kiwi guides who are highly trained to keep you safe, make you smile and teach you amazing things as they bring the forest to life.

It’s an adventure that puts you at the heart of the forest restoration story, with every ticket purchased contributing to conservation efforts. To date, 220 hectares of the Dansey Road Scenic Reserve have been restored by removing thousands of predators. Together we have brought the forest back to life and created a forest eco-sanctuary for birdlife to flourish.

Equal parts inspiring, fun and educational, this award-winning adventure is a must-do adventure activity perfect for all ages. Lose yourself on this engaging encounter with the natural world and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Started in 2008 by two pioneering Kiwi mates who had a vision of delivering a mind blowing forest experience using a series of ziplines, swing bridges & elevated platforms, this experience was recently ranked the #1 Nature activity IN THE WORLD by Tripadvisor! Praise doesn't get much higher than that. Not only is this a beautiful & thrilling forest experience, it is also environmentally responsible & educational. A portion of every ticket sold goes to the restoration of the native NZ forest that the tour runs in. You arrive as a stranger & leave as a part of the story of the impressive conservation efforts that have taken place here!

It’s then just a short walk to the Metro / Te Ananui Cave, climbing high above the river to the cave entrance.

Leaving daylight behind you will explore as the first cavers did: with only the light you bring, and not a a handrail or boardwalk to be seen! It’s truly one of the few natural and “real” guided cave experiences left: seeing, feeling and getting close to an ancient wonderland sculpted by water and decorated with fragile calcite formations.

Underground you will visit such famous formations as The Altar, the highly decorated ‘Hall of Refugees’, Pancake Corner and more, before you emerge back to daylight at the awe-inspiring Main Entrance of the Metro / Te Ananui – having journeyed right through the mountain!

A short rest, then you’ll head back to find the stars of the show: Arachnocampa luminosa: the New Zealand GlowWorm. One becomes ten, then a hundred, then thousands. Before your eyes, entire galaxies of GlowWorms appear, spanning the ceiling over your head, following the streamway into the distance. Your guides will enrich your journey with captivating illustrations, explanations and stories connecting you with this special place.

Returning via the same path, you’ll emerge back to the daylight. A short stroll leads back to the train, then to the comparative civilisation of Charleston.

This is an unique journey that takes you into one of the few publicly accessible cave systems that remain in its state of natural, unspoiled beauty. It’s a simply stunning Eco-tour in a very special place.

You'll have an instructor by your side through the whole experience - they will give you an orientation on the basics of flying so you can get the most out of your flights. Once you've been briefed you'll receive your full flight gear which includes a helmet and flight-suit.

Once in the wind tunnel, your instructor will be right by your side providing personal instruction and will be able to demonstrate new skills as you improve.

You get 8 flights and each flight lasts 60 seconds - by the time you have had your 8 flights included in this package, that is the equivalent to the freefall of 10 skydives from 12,000 feet!

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

We think this is a really fun activity that is suitable to so many people. While it's not the same as climbing in an aeroplane and jumping out from 15,000 feet - not everyone wants to do that - so we think this is a perfect sweet spot. And who knows....maybe this will inspire you to take on a real skydive! Alex and Tayla from Chuffed visited iFLY in 2021 and had a ball!

This is the most popular dolphin watching cruise in the Bay of Islands, and for good reason! Board your cruise in Paihia or Russell and take in the stunning views as we glide out through the islands and along the Rakaumangamanga Peninsula to Cape Brett, where a historic lighthouse keeps watch over Piercy Island/Motukōkako, or as it is popularly known the ‘Hole in the Rock’.

According to Māori legend, local warriors used to paddle through the Hole in the Rock in their canoes before departing for battle. Drops of water from the cave roof above were a good omen. If conditions permit, your skipper will expertly guide the ship through the narrow space... and if you get dripped on, consider yourself lucky!

Keep an eye out for dolphins, whales and other marine life during your cruise, and have your camera ready as we get you up close to the action. Our purpose-built catamaran is licensed by the Department of Conservation for dolphin viewing and our crew have years of experience locating dolphins in these waters. Please note that during our morning cruise we are permitted to interact with common dolphins only.

Cruises include an island stopover at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island. Stroll along the white sand beach, or walk to the top of the hill for scenic views over the entire Bay of Islands. On our morning cruise you can choose our free island extension – stay longer, explore the island’s walking trails and beautiful beaches, and return with us in the afternoon.

Experience Provider: Raglan Surf School

Catch some waves in Raglan with a family surf lesson. This coastal town with its magnificent black sand coastline is an absolute surfing mecca. Raglan offers world-class surf breaks and some of the most consistent surf in the country. With a bit of help from your instructor you'll be riding the waves like a pro in no time.

The group lesson starts at Ngarunui Beach car park, 5 minutes outside Raglan. Raglan Surf School chose to have a maximum ratio of 6 students to 1 instructor, this means they’re able to offer you plenty of personalised tips.

First, you’ll learn the basics of surfing and surfboard vocabulary, stance, posture and a proper dose of water and beach safety.

You’ll be fully prepared before you hit the surf! You’ll get  custom fitted for a wetsuit and surfboard at the iconic Red fire-truck and wooden trailer, located at Ngarunui Beach car park.

After a quick regroup on the sand you’ll have your instructor right there beside you in the surf ready to help you choose your waves, help line your board up and even push you into waves. The goal is to have you paddling into waves yourself by the end of the lesson.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Raglan is known globally for its iconic breaks & surf culture. Less known is that it's also home to NZ's original surf school, and barely known by anyone, Raglan Surf School were one of Chuffed's very first partner businesses! We have heard nothing but rave reviews from our customers who have surfed with these guys, so we're confident they'll have the whole family riding the waves in no time!
