Ride 2:  Cycle 16-35kms along flat, easy pathways to Cape Kidnappers.
Have a leisurely start with breakfast at one of the cool cafes in Ahuriri. When you are ready to go (mid morning is good!) come to Takaro Trails base, collect your bikes and get your instructions (and map) to begin your cycle to Cape Kidnappers. You can visit one or all of the Cape Kidnappers cluster of wineries – Elephant Hill, Clearview and Te Awanga Estate for wine tastings.

Lunch (cost to be paid direct to winery) is at the gorgeous Clearview Estate . The van will pick you up after lunch (around 4pm TBC on the day) to transport you back for another night at your accommodation in Ahuriri.

What is Canyoning?

Canyoning is one of the newer Abel Tasman activities. It is a combination of lots of fun stuff all bunched into one exciting activity. Trips normally start with a walk through beautiful scenery. Then it’s time to get the rubber suits on and start making your way down the canyon. We jump off cliffs into deep pools below, slide down water polished chutes and abseil besides or sometimes even through showering waterfalls. Most of the time you’ll be surrounded by steep walls covered in moss and ferns. And of course your guides will make sure you know exactly what to do. Going on a trip is the only way anyone can get to see these stunning places and experience all the fun stuff Mother Nature throws at you.

The Extreme Fox includes breathtaking return helicopter flights in and out of the Fox Glacier over lush rainforest. Your pilot will point out New Zealand’s highest peaks, Aoraki/Mt. Cook and Mt. Tasman as they loom ahead of you, and you’ll swoop down over the upper ice fall of Fox Glacier. THE HMNZS CANTERBURY
The ex-HMNZS Canterbury was scuttled on 3 November 2007 at Deep Water Cove in the Bay of Islands to provide a dive wreck and what a dive she is. Prepared with divers in mind; plenty of extra access points have been created to provide an ease of entry and exit, this makes for some particularly good penetration and swims through opportunities. The wreck sits completely upright and fully intact, and her position in Deep Water Cove is protected in most conditions. She lies at a depth of between 12 metres at the middle funnel, and 38 metres at the stern, where visibility can range between 8 and 30 metres. At 113 metres long and at 13 metres in beam, this site is big enough to make you want to dive it twice!

THE HMNZS WAIKATO
HMNZS Waikato (F55) was a Leander Batch 2TA frigate of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). She was one of two Leanders built for the RNZN, the other being the Batch 3 HMNZS Canterbury. These two New Zealand ships relieved British ships of the Armilla patrol during the Falklands conflict, freeing British ships for deployment.

HMNZS Waikato was purposefully sunk in November 2000 and now lies 30 metres down and bolt upright on the seabed. She has large holes cut in the side to make entry and exit very safe and less experienced divers will gain valuable wreck diving experience from the vessel. The shallowest part of the wreck is only 8 metres from the surface.

The Journey

The journey starts at the bottom of the valley floor with a brief korero (talk) about the area history, including the pre-European and kauri logging history. Then the hikoi (walk) begins as we ascend to the top of the river and into the top of the canyon where the views are grand and the experience of what you are about to do finally hits you! We then put our gear on and start the descent after receiving safety instructions, an abseiling lesson and a traditional karakia (prayer) before dropping over the first 30 metre waterfall.
