Ultimate Zipline Experience

TripAdvisor declared Rotorua Canopy Tour's Ultimate Experience the 11th best experience in the WORLD in 2021. That's pretty high praise!

You need to allow yourself 3.5 hours to experience this activity which is surprisingly suitable for almost everyone.

After meeting at their base on the outskirts of Rotorua where you meet you guides who ooze professionalism and fun times, you'll be transported up to a magical forest that appears to have been lost in time. You'll immediately be struck with how you feel as you are transported to another world full of amazing trees, ferns, smells and noise.

Perhaps the most impressive feat by the team at Canopy Tours is over the past 10 years they have removed all the possums and rats from this once unloved and forgotten slice of New Zealand forest and restored it to a pest free environment - so much so that you can spot many bird species and in an amazing highlight of the expereince, even handfeed wild robins.

The experience consists of 6 ziplines for a total of 1.2 kilometres. They vary from shooting you through tight gaps in the forest layer to giant swooping flights through deep forested valleys. There is even a 400 metre tandem line so you can race you partner....but this tour is so much more than an adreneline rush.

In addition there are a number of suspended bridges that span wide valleys, floating staircases and one of the highlights - the 50 metre high cliff walk - that appears seemingly out of no where as you arrive perched high on it after a zipline flight out of the forest canopy.

It's a truly special experience, suitable for anyone with a okay level of fitness. It operates in all weather but does suspend operations when high winds exist.

After reaching the altitude, the plane doors will open. You’ll be getting ready for the big jump, with your tandem master right behind you. There is an indescribable thrill in the moments between the plane doors opening and you jumping off it. Your heart starts pounding so fast you can almost hear it. You will see how small yet beautiful the world looks from 16,500 ft. Then finally, you jump!

Free falling for around 70 seconds, you’ll experience an adrenaline rush like never before. Flying through the NZ’s skies, reaching speeds up to 200 km/hr is going to be an experience that is going to be with you for the rest of your life.

After the free fall, the parachute comes out and you’ll begin floating back to earth, soaking in the pristine beauty of Lake Taupo. The parachute ride with your tandem master is going to be an adventure in itself.

We think everyone should jump out of a plane at least once in their lives. It's hard to describe the feeling, but you can imagine it, hanging out the side of a plane, attached to a highly experienced instructor and then simply falling away from the plane at up to 200kph. A truly bucket list experience.

It takes a certain kind of person to jump from an aircraft at 15,000ft into thin air. It takes courage.

Expect sensory overload as your mind, body and soul fight against every natural self-preserving urge. The challenge is immense. Harnessed by space age materials to a qualified Jumpmaster, you step out of that aircraft door and for up to  60 seconds freefall at 200 kph - terminal velocity!

After a 15 minute scenic flight to altitude, you will nudge towards the edge of the plane before being thrown out! Keep your head up, smile at your skydive photographer and take in the stunning surroundings. After an exhilarating freefall, you will experience a 4-5 minute parachute ride, floating safely back down to the skydive drop zone.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Spending some time with the friendly & professional NZONE Skydive crew at their base was a good way for the Chuffed team to relax before taking the leap! It was easy to see why these guys are New Zealand's only tandem skydiving company to have won New Zealand's supreme tourism award.

Do both in a day, or make an entire weekend out of your Chuffed Gift, with these two incredible Kaikoura Experiences!

Whale Watch:

Whale Watch is New Zealand's only vessel based whale watching company offering an exciting up-close encounter with the world's largest toothed predator the Giant Sperm Whale. See the whales in their natural environment at all times of the year, boasting a 95% success rate!

The main focus of your tour is to locate and view the Giant Sperm Whale. Whale Watch average between 1 to 2 whale sightings per tour due to the length of time the whales can stay submerged. The whales form loose pods, keeping several miles between each other, so viewing any more than 1 to 2 whales per trip is a real bonus.

Around 80% of the world’s whale and dolphin species migrate past our coastline so at any given time there is the opportunity for other species of marine mammals to be sighted such as Blue, Fin, Sei, Humpback, Minke, Pilot, Orca and Southern Right Whales, Common Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Southern Right Whale Dolphins, Elephant Seals and Leopard Seals.

Depending on the amount of time available after viewing the Sperm Whales, the captain of the vessel may decide to move in along the coastline and see what other types of marine life can be encountered. This could include Dusky and Hector Dolphins and the New Zealand Fur Seal.

Kaikōura is also home to around 75% of the world’s pelagic sea bird species which include Wandering and Royal Albatross, Mollymawk Albatross, Petrels, Shearwaters, Prions, Fulmars, Gannets, Terns and Herons.

Throughout your tour there is an onboard visual presentation, “World of the Whales” – an experience that takes passengers “virtually” to the bottom of the Kaikōura undersea canyon. The presentation also provides information for a variety of marine life found in Kaikōura waters.

Designed specially for whale watching, the modern catamarans are equipped with engines that minimise underwater noise and toilets that never pollute the sea. The main passenger cabin is enclosed and large outside decks offer great viewing and photo opportunities. Passenger numbers for each tour are kept well below vessel carrying capacity to ensure your tour experience remains a personal one.

Hapuku Kitchen:

At its heart, Hapuku Kitchen is focused on reconnecting the kitchen to the land and sea, celebrating the abundant larder nature has to offer - taking inspiration from the wild Kaikōura landscape. You are hosted in the home of Fiona & Chris Read, located between the soaring peaks of the Kaikōura mountains and the wild Pacific coast of Aotearoa New Zealand, for a culinary adventure that celebrates the season.

The Hapuku Kitchen Seasonal Feast is an ever-changing half day experience, focused on uncomplicated and utterly delicious dishes made from ingredients sourced from the gardens and local producers.

The day begins with an introduction to the kitchen and the menu for the day.  This is discussed over a cup of locally roasted coffee or a refreshing drink made from herbs and flowers from the garden.  You’ll then embark on a wander around the Hapuku Kitchen property, foraging in the garden for fruit, vegetables and herbs.

Once you have completed the harvest, return to the kitchen and as a group, prepare the various dishes that make up the menu.  With help always at hand, you will learn many techniques and tricks on the creation of the dishes of the day.

To finish the day, simply relax and enjoy the feast accompanied with wine or beer from some of Fiona’s favourite Canterbury and Marlborough winemakers and brewers.  Delicious home-made non-alcoholic beverages are also available, such as sparkling elderflower and cucumber.

Blue Creek Canyoning Adventure

Not keen on getting too wet but love abseiling?

Apart from a couple of waist-deep pools Blue Creek is a dry canyoning trip. This stunning Kahurangi canyon is deep and narrow as it was carved into a softer type of rock over many years. In some places you can touch both walls at the same time and if you look up you’ll only see a sliver of daylight. It really feels like you’re getting absorbed by the earth. If you ask your guides nicely they might even try to keep your feet dry on this one. By the end of this trip, you’ll be an abseiling pro!

What is Canyoning?

Canyoning is one of the newer Abel Tasman activities. It is a combination of lots of fun stuff all bunched into one exciting activity. Trips normally start with a walk through beautiful scenery. Then it’s time to get the rubber suits on and start making your way down the canyon. We jump off cliffs into deep pools below, slide down water polished chutes and abseil besides or sometimes even through showering waterfalls. Most of the time you’ll be surrounded by steep walls covered in moss and ferns. And of course your guides will make sure you know exactly what to do. Going on a trip is the only way anyone can get to see these stunning places and experience all the fun stuff Mother Nature throws at you.

You will experience a huge rush leaving the aircraft – but just as quickly notice that the sensation of the roaring wind below you actually cushions you as you travel speeds of 200kph (120mph).

Then wow – the rush turns to extraordinary peace when at approximately 5,000 feet, your parachute opens, and you gently drift over the Abel Tasman with breathtakingly beautiful views. You'll feel the freedom of flying over turquoise oceans, snow-capped mountains and three national parks – some of the most beautiful scenery on earth is found right at the centre of New Zealand. At this point, you’ll either be stunned to silence or screaming for joy! It’s an indescribable feeling that you will never forget. You won't be able to wipe the smile off your face!

This 16,500ft Tandem skydive is the most popular skydive in Abel Tasman. The 16,500ft Tandem skydive requires use of oxygen masks. The oxygen mask is there to lessen the effect of lower oxygen levels which will allow you to enjoy your experience way more. The mask only stays on in the plane, a few minutes before your skydive your Tandem Master will take the mask off and you’re off to have the best time of your life!!! This is the ultimate skydive package.

  • Up to 70 seconds freefall!
  • 15-20  minute flight to altitude
  • 3-4 minute flight under canopy
  • Breathtaking views of the Abel Tasman
  • View both North & South Islands

Rotorua Canopy Tours

TripAdvisor declared Rotorua Canopy Tour's Ultimate Experience the 11th best experience in the world in 2021. That's pretty high praise!

You need to allow yourself 3.5 hours to experience this activity, which is surprisingly suitable for almost everyone.

After meeting at their base on the outskirts of Rotorua where you meet you guides who ooze professionalism and fun times you'll be transported up to a magical forest that appears to have been lost in time. You'll immediately be struck with how you feel as you are transported to another world full of amazing trees, ferns, smells and noise.

Perhaps the most impressive feat by the team at Canopy Tours is over the past 10 years they have removed all the possums and rats from this once unloved and forgotten slice of New Zealand forest and restored it to a pest free environment - so much so that you can spot many bird species and in an amazing highlight of the experience, even handfeed wild robins.

The experience consists of 6 ziplines for a total of 1.2 kilometres. They vary from shooting you through tight gaps in the forest layer to giant swooping flights through deep forested valleys. There is even a 400 metre tandem line so you can race you partner....but this tour is so much more than an adrenaline rush.

Secret Spot

You get your own tub for your party, no interruptions or rowdy swimmers with you – great! The 12 tubs are secluded and set outside amongst the tree ferns, with optional umbrellas over the tub to shade you from the sun or rain. At night you soak in a magical setting of lanterns amongst the beautifully lit surrounding native bush.

Oh, and what goes well with a hot tub soak after a big day’s adventure? A nice cold craft beer or cider or refreshing beverage of your choice. Just like a journey to our favourite hot stream in the bush, there's built in lots of cool little surprises for you to discover on your visit to Secret Spot. After showering and changing in brand-new cedar facilities, and picking up your flax kete (basket) with craft beverage of your choice, you head down the boardwalk through the ferns to find your secluded hot tub next to the Waipa stream. Relax, share the stories from your day’s adventures, and connect with nature.

Raft Down the Kaituna Waterfall!

The River Rats Kaituna Waterfall Experience will see you paddling through the pristine heart of the best rafting region in New Zealand – Okere, Rotorua. This spectacular 2 – 2.5 hour experience provides all the gear you need, initial training, and around 50 minutes on the water.

You will experience a thrilling mix of dropping down three waterfalls, pushing through 14 rushing rapids, and paddling through calm waters of recovery where you can look back in awe at what you have achieved.

The area is steeped in Māori history and you will learn about the history and caves where the women and children were hidden and then later used as the burial ground for Chief Tutea – hence the naming of the mighty waterfall the Tutea Falls.

The Tutea Falls on Kaituna (Okere) River, Rotorua is the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall at 7 meters. There is plenty of time to build up anticipation and practice your newly acquired skills in the rapids and two smaller waterfalls before the big drop.

On average around one boat in 20 will flip upside down at the bottom of the big waterfall, however, all the major rapids are followed by calm water, so there is time to get the boat back upright and get everyone back in.

Safety is paramount and the  expert guides have been riding these rapids for many years and they still love every minute of this thrilling experience!

Experience Provider: Rotorua Canopy Tours

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Started in 2008 by two pioneering Kiwi mates who had a vision of delivering a mind blowing forest experience using a series of ziplines, swing bridges & elevated platforms. Not only is this a beautiful & thrilling forest experience, it is also environmentally responsible & educational. A portion of every ticket sold goes to the restoration of the native NZ forest that the tour runs in. You arrive as a stranger & leave as a part of the story of the impressive conservation efforts that have taken place here!
