Cruise the Whanganui River on the iconic Paddle Steamer Waimarie
$99 NZD
Experience Provider: Waimarie
A cruise aboard the iconic Paddle Steamer Waimarie is undoubtedly one of the most authentic ways to experience Whanganui River’s scenery and history.
Salvaged from the bottom of the Whanganui River where she sat for around 50 years, the Paddle Steamer Waimarie was restored to her former glory and re-launched in 2000 to make her New Zealand’s only authentic coal-fired paddle steamer in operation. Today, we can but dream of the hustle and bustle of the trading settlers and iwi who knew the Paddle Steamer Waimarie of old. Instead, we can enjoy her resurrection with a leisurely river cruise more fitting to her stately grace.
Experience the charm of river travel as it was in days gone by with this two-hour cruise. Embark on a journey from the Riverboat Centre Wharf, where you'll be swept up the river, immersing yourself in the scenery and unique views of Whanganui that can only be appreciated from Te Awa Tupua, the Whanganui River.
As you cruise along Te Awa Tupua - Whanganui River, you'll see heritage homes, hear commentary with riverboat history and fascinating points of interest along the way and see Whanganui from its heart. Don't miss the chance to see the boiler that powers the paddle steamer and perhaps meet the homing pigeons, even sending a message with them on their flight back to the Riverboat Centre.
Inclusions
- 2 hour cruise on the Paddle Steamer Waimarie
- On board commentary
- Wonderful views
- Meet the homing pigeons and perhaps send a message back with them on their flight to the Riverboat Centre
- The nostalgic sound of the steam whistle, the boiler powering the paddles, and the paddles making way their way through the water

Visit the Matakohe Kauri Museum & Enjoy Lunch at Gumdiggers Cafe
$99 NZD
Experience Provider: Kauri Museum
Deep in the heart of an ancient forest that’s gone, the Kauri Museum celebrates one of the world’s greatest trees and honours our relationship with it.
We share stories of courage and determination, tragedy and triumph, boundless hope and unfathomable loss; kauri making a nation.
Dig Deeper Here.
The kauri tree, Agathis australis, is New Zealand’s largest and most famous native tree. Located midway between Auckland and the Bay of Islands, the Kauri Museum tells some of the stories of this amazing tree.
Celebrating everything to do with kauri and the people of northern New Zealand/Aotearoa, the Museum has stories of the Māori of the north eastern Kaipara, of European pioneers, of foresters and sawmillers, gum diggers and farmers, and of business people, fishers and the families who have made this area their home.
This experience also includes lunch at the Gumdiggers Café, conveniently located opposite the Museum. You are welcome to leave the Museum, have your lunch, and return for a further look!
Museum highlights include:
- The Museum includes a full sized sawmill, which moves at slow speed so visitors can get up close to see how the mill works.
- The Smith Wing shows huge kauri logs and has actual equipment for felling trees, transporting logs, milling timber and collecting kauri gum.
- The Sterling Wing showcases a fascinating recreation of a quality 1880-1920 six room home, fully furnished with original decor and lifelike models dressed in period costume – wall to wall with authentic furniture, fittings and ornaments. The Sterling Wing is typical of how kauri timber was used for building homes and for making beautiful furniture, and features many valuable Northland heritage pieces.
- Our life-size recreation of a two storey boarding house sits inside the museum. As well as providing accomodation, boarding houses provided an important focal point for local commerce, enabling visiting professionals such as dentists and bankers to set up shop and service the local community. The mannequins and lifelike models featured throughout the museum are based on real people. The Boarding House includes a photographic tribute to the boarding houses of the Northland region.

Pohatu is the largest Australasian Little Penguin colony on mainland New Zealand and where this family owned business has worked over the last three decades protecting White-flippered Penguins, Canterbury's own variant of Australasian Little Penguin, from introduced predators.
This is a wonderful option for people who wish to take part in the monitoring program and discover more, in depth, about the conservation efforts. This gives you great insight into the life of a penguin and the chance to see the birds up-close and a unique opportunity to watch them socialising on the water.
After a breathtaking scenic drive over Akaroa extinct volcano and photo opportunities you will discover tranquil Pohatu Bay where you will set off for a walk around the colony to monitor nesting sites and make sure that the Little Penguins are doing well. Then, you will have the unique opportunity to spot some undisturbed from hidden hides, socializing on the water with provided binoculars and telescope.
With night falling there is a high likelihood to see some penguins returning to shore and relaxing on the rocks before heading to their nests. As they have to walk so far to feed chicks you will leave before dark and leave them in peace.
In addition, tours booked late November to February may have the opportunity to see up-close rehabilitation efforts such as feedings and swim therapy.
The tour includes:
- 4WD transportation from Akaroa by 4WD minibus to and from Pohatu bay on some of Banks peninsula back country road,
- Welcome by rare sheep breeds that can be hand fed,
- A conservation walk and talk within the penguin habitat,
- Monitoring of penguin nesting homes to check on the colony,
- With camouflage gear and through binoculars and scope, watch penguin(s) in the middle of the bay, preening, resting and socialising,
- A likelihood of some birds coming ashore just under the hides as it get darker
Why is this Chuffed Worthy?
We love this business. This is an exemplar of how, when done well tourism is such a powerful force. Pohutu Penguins is a family run business with a long standing history of protecting the Little Penguin in Pohatu Bay. When Shireen and Francis Helps first started their penguin conservation work the penguins faced massive challenges via predation by rats, cats, ferrets and stoats. The colonies around Bank's Peninsula were disappearing at an alarming rate.
Through predator trapping, monitoring, rehabilitation and creating awareness the Pohutu Colony stabilized and has now grown into the largest colony of Little Penguins on mainland New Zealand. Today, the conservation work continues, and the tourism business has created jobs, raises marine conservation awareness and in short is simply a fantastic story!

Here the team from Around the Basin Bike will cover mountain bike fitting, navigation, bike safety and (very importantly) winery information. There’s the opportunity to explore Arrowtown and visit one of the cafés, or hop on your bike and get straight into your morning ride. From Arrowtown the trail follows the beautiful Arrow and Kawarau rivers to the Kawarau Suspension Bridge – home of the world’s first bungy jump.
From there spend the rest of the day biking at your leisure along the Gibbston River Trail, using an informative winery map to visit as many of the cellar doors linked throughout this easy riding trail.
There are plenty of wineries to call into for tastings or lunch (additional cost) or picnic at along the way, and the crew will stop in with their shuttle to pick up any wine you may purchase, how good is that!
Wineries include: Chard Farm, Gibbston Valley Winery, Rockburn, Gibbston Tavern, Kinross, Brennan and Mt Rosa.
You will be picked up at 4:30 pm from your winery of choice for the shuttle back to Queenstown.
The riding distance to the first winery is 15 km. To get all the way to the end of the wine valley, you’ll end up covering about 25 km.

James from Chuffed has visited Off Road NZ at least 20 times in the last 15 years - with his wife, visiting friends and family, groups of friends....the Go Karting never fails to impress. Part of it's charm is it's remote location on a 125 hectare farm 25 minutes drive into the hills from Rotorua. The fun is addictive, and the competitive spirit against yourself and your friends comes to the fore. So when Chuffed was born - Off Road NZ was one of the first calls James made to see if they wanted to be a partner. And lucky for everyone they said yes.
