You'll begin by meeting your wine guide at the Oenotheque (wine library), where you will connect & break the ice over a glass of Champagne.

With your own personal sommelier and storyteller to guide you, you’ll be taken on an exploration of three New Zealand wine regions sampling limited production wines from our family of fine wine brands — Smith & Sheth CRU, Pyramid Valley and Lowburn Ferry. These wines become the vehicle for this adventure, and together we dive headfirst into the world of wine.

It is our place to share with you the story of who we are. The stories of the land. The people. The history. The culture. The craft. And the pleasure of wine held in every bottle.

The beauty of the studio is that for 2.5 hours, it becomes your space. To ask, to taste, to learn, to laugh, to share…the Heretaunga studio becomes a space removed from the everyday “busyness” of the world. Where you can stop, listen, taste and smell. Here, you will enjoy a deep dive into around 7 wines from Heretaunga, Waikari & Lowburn.

It is a theatre. It is a barrel hall. It is Aotearoa like you’ve never experienced before.

Once the formalities of the session are over, you are invited back to the Oenotheque to wind down, here a wine list & bar menu are available at your own cost.

Faith is a 19.7 metre (64.6 foot), wooden motor-sailer, built in 1935 in Scotland. 8 Hours
Adults
Experience Provider: Hike and Bike Coromandel

Experience the beautiful Coromandel Coastal Walkway, an old bridle path once used by early Maori and European Settlers to link east with west at the tip of the remote Northern Coromandel Peninsula.

Check In 8.20 a.m. Meet at Hike & Bike Coromandel, 105 Wharf Road, Coromandel Town, where complimentary, off-street parking is available.  Local Accommodation pickups are available by prior arrangement.

Depart 8.30 a.m. We strike out through the historic town of Coromandel with its heritage buildings and gold mining stories from days gone by.  We’ll point out the iconic Kauri Tree, once decimated by early Settlers for timber, to now being re-established by teams of enthusiastic locals.  A little further north we pass through sleepy, coastal villages with views across the island studded Hauraki Gulf.  Admire the large scale Hereford Beef Studs and the contrasting Tibetan Retreat, Mahamudra with its Stupa, glinting proudly in the morning sun.

Approx 9.05 a.m:  We pause in the laidback town of Colville with its art galleries, a co-operative style general store and Hereford N a Pickle Café, famous for its home grown meats, pickles and burgers.  As the road travels inland we catch glimpses of Mount Moehau with its regenerating forests, home to New Zealand’s Brown Kiwi.  We recall the efforts of local volunteers to rid the area of pests to ensure the repopulation and future of this shy bird. There is the chance of a tea break at Tangiaro Kiwi Retreat, located at the base of a bushclad valley just on the outskirts of Port Charles (seasonal hours apply/own cost).

Approx 10.30 a.m. The Walkway starts with a gradual climb from Stony Bay, as it threads its way through regenerating native bush complete with birdsong, mountain streams and rockpools.  Photo opportunities abound along the way with panoramic sea vistas from Sugarloaf, over the Colville Channel to Great Barrier Island and beyond.

Enjoy lunch at the Lookout with its impressive panoramic views or rest on the heritage seat further on and soak up the blissful peace.  The Walkway concludes with a leisurely downhill section through an impressive beef and sheep farm on the way to Fletcher Bay.  Keen walkers are most welcome to tackle the 3km Muriwai Walk, a stunning hike along the cliff tops and out along the spreading sands of Port Jackson beach.  Here we take a short break for afternoon tea with enough time to enjoy a refreshing swim.

Approx 4.30 p.m. Rejoin the minibus as it continues along the pohutukawa lined coast beside the Hauraki Gulf, playground for fishermen, adventure seekers and holidaymakers.  Keep an eye out for dolphins and orca which sometimes frolic just metres from the thin ribbon of road.  We pass back through Colville around 5pm before concluding your day in Coromandel Town at approximately 6pm.

While on board, keep a look out for fur seals and penguins – we see a lot of them around this area.

Paterson Inlet is home to renowned wildlife sanctuary Ulva Island and you’ll stop there for a 45 minute guided walk. The island is home to weka (native woodhen), bush robins, rare saddlebacks and yellowheads amongst other species. It is also a protected habitat for some of New Zealand’s rarest plant species. A regular highlight is to encounter an inquisitive weka on the beach.

For the remainder of the cruise around Paterson Inlet, relax on board our modern catamaran and enjoy the coastal scenery before heading back to base.

Ulva Island/Te Wharawhara

The island sanctuary is located within Paterson Inlet (Whaka a Te Wera) and offers the opportunity to view rarer native species including weka, kākā, kākāriki, tūī, bellbirds (korimako), pigeons (kereru), fantails (piwakawaka), tomtit (miromiro) and brown creeper (pīpipi).

The saddleback (tieke), yellowhead (mohua), Stewart Island robin (toutouwai) and rifleman (titipounamu) have all been successfully reintroduced to Ulva Island. Some lucky visitors to the sanctuary have also seen the Stewart Island brown kiwi (tokoeka) during the day.

Ulva Island is part of the Rakiura National Park and covers an approximate 269 hectares which are mostly managed by the Department of Conservation.

The island, which has no permanent human population, is supported by the Ulva Island Charitable Trust, a group of Stewart Islanders, who raise funds for research, maintain the tracks and infrastructure, and help with bird releases.

Experience one of New Zealand’s (if not the world’s) best GlowWorm displays, deep in the Paparoa National Park, near Punakaiki New Zealand. You will journey right into the heart of the West Coast rainforest, exploring the beautiful unmodified Metro Cave System, viewing an ancient "wonderland" of stalactites and stalagmites & gazing at its incredible glowing underground dwellers.

The tour starts with taking the Nile River Rainforest Train into the lush forests of the Paparoa National Park. The Nile River Rainforest Train is a short interpretative train journey through primeval rain forest whilst seated in small open sided carriages. It’s then just a short walk to the Metro / Te Ananui Cave, climbing high above the river to the cave entrance.

Leaving daylight behind you will explore as the first cavers did: with only the light you bring, and not a a handrail or boardwalk to be seen! It’s truly one of the few natural and “real” guided cave experiences left: seeing, feeling and getting close to an ancient wonderland sculpted by water and decorated with fragile calcite formations.

Underground you will visit such famous formations as The Altar, the highly decorated ‘Hall of Refugees’, Pancake Corner and more, before you emerge back to daylight at the awe-inspiring Main Entrance of the Metro / Te Ananui – having journeyed right through the mountain!

Then you’ll head back to find the stars of the show: Arachnocampa luminosa: the New Zealand GlowWorm. One becomes ten, then a hundred, then thousands. Before your eyes, entire galaxies of GlowWorms appear, spanning the ceiling over your head, following the streamway into the distance. Your guides will enrich your journey with captivating illustrations, explanations and stories connecting you with this special place.

This is an unique journey that takes you into one of the few publicly accessible cave systems that remain in its state of natural, unspoiled beauty. It’s a simply stunning Eco-tour in a very special place.

Experience Provider: Whale Watch Kaikoura

Whale Watch is New Zealand's only vessel based whale watching company offering an exciting up-close encounter with the world's largest toothed predator the Giant Sperm Whale. See the whales in their natural environment at all times of the year, boasting a 95% success rate!

The main focus of your tour is to locate and view the Giant Sperm Whale. Whale Watch average between 1 to 2 whale sightings per tour due to the length of time the whales can stay submerged. The whales form loose pods, keeping several miles between each other, so viewing any more than 1 to 2 whales per trip is a real bonus.

Around 80% of the world’s whale and dolphin species migrate past our coastline so at any given time there is the opportunity for other species of marine mammals to be sighted such as Blue, Fin, Sei, Humpback, Minke, Pilot, Orca and Southern Right Whales, Common Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Southern Right Whale Dolphins, Elephant Seals and Leopard Seals.

Depending on the amount of time available after viewing the Sperm Whales, the captain of the vessel may decide to move in along the coastline and see what other types of marine life can be encountered. This could include Dusky and Hector Dolphins and the New Zealand Fur Seal.

Kaikōura is also home to around 75% of the world’s pelagic sea bird species which include Wandering and Royal Albatross, Mollymawk Albatross, Petrels, Shearwaters, Prions, Fulmars, Gannets, Terns and Herons.

Throughout your tour there is an onboard visual presentation, “World of the Whales” – an experience that takes passengers “virtually” to the bottom of the Kaikōura undersea canyon. The presentation also provides information for a variety of marine life found in Kaikōura waters.

Designed specially for whale watching, the modern catamarans are equipped with engines that minimise underwater noise and toilets that never pollute the sea. The main passenger cabin is enclosed and large outside decks offer great viewing and photo opportunities. Passenger numbers for each tour are kept well below vessel carrying capacity to ensure your tour experience remains a personal one.

Coming in to land you will fly past the Paihia township. An exciting way to see the must-visit hole in the rock while in the Bay of Islands!

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Salt Air has been flying visitors over the Bay of Islands for 30 years! After beginning with a Seaplane operating tours from the Paihia waterfront, Salt Air has grown into a fleet of Helicopters & fixed wing planes operating from the Paihia heli pad, Haruru falls & Kerikeri airports! We wanted to offer Helicopter flights all over NZ in our gifts, and a trip to see the iconic Hole in the Rock was the perfect experience to add to our repertoire!

Wayne from Canyonz has a lifetime of experience in canyoning all over the world, and jumped at the opportunity to own his own canyoning business operating in the Coromandel valleys out of Thames. This is not a mass tourism experience, this is an educational, fun & inspirational canyoning experience that you will never forget!
