If you ask your guides nicely they might even try to keep your feet dry on this one. By the end of this trip, you’ll be an abseiling pro!

What is Canyoning?
Canyoning is one of the newer Abel Tasman activities. It is a combination of lots of fun stuff all bunched into one exciting activity. Trips normally start with a walk through beautiful scenery. Then it’s time to get the rubber suits on and start making your way down the canyon. We jump off cliffs into deep pools below, slide down water polished chutes and abseil besides or sometimes even through showering waterfalls. Most of the time you’ll be surrounded by steep walls covered in moss and ferns. And of course your guides will make sure you know exactly what to do. Going on a trip is the only way anyone can get to see these stunning places and experience all the fun stuff Mother Nature throws at you.

Fly like a bird on Rotorua’s Ultimate Canopy Tour deep in untouched native forest and discover the Manupirua Hot Pools, hidden on the shores of Lake Rotoiti, on a leisurely guided kayak adventure.

These are two amazing Rotorua experiences combining the best of the natural elements. Zipline through incredible untouched native forest and kayak to secluded hot pools which are only accessible by water.
Ultimate Zipline Experience
TripAdvisor declared Rotorua Canopy Tour's Ultimate Experience the 11th best experience in the WORLD in 2021. That's pretty high praise!
You need to allow yourself 3.5 hours to experience this activity which is surprisingly suitable for almost everyone.
After meeting at their base on the outskirts of Rotorua where you meet you guides who ooze professionalism and fun times, you'll be transported up to a magical forest that appears to have been lost in time. You'll immediately be struck with how you feel as you are transported to another world full of amazing trees, ferns, smells and noise.
Perhaps the most impressive feat by the team at Canopy Tours is over the past 10 years they have removed all the possums and rats from this once unloved and forgotten slice of New Zealand forest and restored it to a pest free environment - so much so that you can spot many bird species and in an amazing highlight of the expereince, even handfeed wild robins.
The experience consists of 6 ziplines for a total of 1.2 kilometres. They vary from shooting you through tight gaps in the forest layer to giant swooping flights through deep forested valleys. There is even a 400 metre tandem line so you can race you partner....but this tour is so much more than an adreneline rush.
In addition there are a number of suspended bridges that span wide valleys, floating staircases and one of the highlights - the 50 metre high cliff walk - that appears seemingly out of no where as you arrive perched high on it after a zipline flight out of the forest canopy.
It's a truly special experience, suitable for anyone with a okay level of fitness. It operates in all weather but does suspend operations when high winds exist.

Two expert guides will greet and outfit you with the safety equipment you will need for the journey. A spectacular 18 minute train ride will take you up New Zealand’s only mountain railway to the start of your ziplining experience. Your two friendly guides will then lead you along eight ziplines, which span through trees and across gullies and streams, to experience New Zealand’s native trees and birds, including our largest tree species, the Kauri.

During the cruise, your knowledgeable and friendly skipper or nature guide will share with you their passion for the region. They’re always ready to answer questions, point out landmarks and provide all the information about the varied wildlife you may see, including dolphins, fur seals, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin.
The Southern Express, M.V. Sinbad, Mariner or Fiordland Navigator may replace the Patea Explorer if maintenance or schedules require.
Things you should know

When targeting Yellowtail Kingfish, Steve will initially hunt out patches of live bait amongst the inner islands. Anglers will now get their first taste of fishing. Here Sabiki Fly rigs are used on a rod and reel to catch Jack Mackerel or Slimey Mackerel
The novice angler will find Steve gives plenty of tuition while catching live bait – a great chance to become familiar with the procedure before doing battle with Kingies.
These small mackerel are held in the live bait tank with a constantly replenishing supply of seawater so that they remain as lively as possible to attract the true bounty, Yellowtail Kingfish.
It is then onto deeper waters where a combination of live bait, cut bait, jigs (lures) or even balloons may be used depending on weather and sea conditions, fish feeding patterns and any other influencing factors indicated on recent fishing expeditions.
Not only do the live bait attract Kingfish, they also tend to attract shark action for some added excitement at various times of the year.

Full day of canyoning in the Coromandel hills!
$749 NZD
Experience Provider: Canyonz
This is truly Canyoning, NZ style! Perhaps the biggest, most exciting and challenging adventure activity in New Zealand, located near Thames in the dramatic Kauaeranga valley on the Coromandel Peninsula.
It is an adventure of a lifetime and is something unforgettable.
The Sleeping God canyon tour is a vertical descent of over three hundred metres down a steep set of waterfalls involving abseils/rappels of up to 80 metres, exhilarating water slides and jumps as high as 14 metres into deep dark pools which are guaranteed to thrill the most intrepid explorer!
You will be challenged to do things that you may have never believed you would ever do, however, this does have the consequence of a positively mind blowing and unforgettable day out!
With professional canyoning guides and small groups, this is the ultimate canyoning experience and it doesn't get any better than this! The tour is aimed at people with a real taste for adventure and a good level of fitness (comparable to a day of hiking). Big jumps are optional, abseils/rappels are not.
The Journey
The journey starts at the bottom of the valley floor with a brief korero (talk) about the area history, including the pre-european and kauri logging history. Then the hikoi (walk) begins as we ascend to the top of the river and into the top of the canyon where the views are grand and the experience of what you are about to do finally hits you! We then put our gear on and start the descent after receiving safety instructions, an abseiling lesson and a traditional karakia (prayer) before dropping over the first 30 metre waterfall
Why is this Chuffed Worthy?
Canyonz were one of Chuffed's very first partner businesses. When we were launching Chuffed, it was smack in the middle of covid, and we wanted our platform to support the many Kiwi owned & operated businesses whose business had been cut at the knees by the pandemic. Wayne from Canyonz has a lifetime of experience in canyoning all over the world, and jumped at the opportunity to own his own Canyoning business operating in the Coromandel valleys out of Thames. This is not a mass tourism experience, this is an eductaional, fun & inspirational canyoning experience that you will never forget!
