Experience Provider: Manea Footprints of Kupe

Located in Opononi, on the edge of the edge of the Hokianga Harbour is this very interesting cultural attraction.

According to some tribal narratives, Kupe was the first Polynesian to discover the islands of New Zealand. Hokianga is uniquely associated with Kupe as the place he secured for his descendants before leaving on his return voyage to our ancient place of origin in the eastern Pacific. Within a generation those descendants, returned to these Hokianga shores. These events and histories are the foundation of local tribal identity.

Manea: Footprints of Kupe was developed from a vision had by local Kaumātua (senior tribal Elders) for preserving their heritage and sharing it with the world.

The actual experience is a 75-minute multisensory journey of guided storytelling – through art, taonga (cultural treasures), film, performance, digital interaction and the splendor of Hokianga’s natural surroundings.

It is split into 3 parts:

Whakapapa / Connect

Meet your guide and begin your journey in the footsteps of Kupe, with descendants of Kupe.

Engage in stories about their ancestors and the ancient realms of Kupe, told through carvings and the surrounding land. Deepen your understanding of Māori customs and the dynamic connections to the natural and spiritual world.

Ruku / Immerse

On your arrival at the Manea whare taonga (house of treasures), you are welcomed with the timeless cultural ceremony of pōwhiri.

You now enter the Manea theatre, where a 20-minute 4D-digital extravaganza and live performance immerses you in a full sensory recreation of the rich and vibrant world of the intrepid adventures of Kupe.

You appreciate in a new way the extraordinary feats of  ocean voyaging.

Toro / Interact

From the theatre, your guide will lead you outside to absorb the full significance of the Hokianga harbour and it's connection.

This was not only where Kupe made his home, but also his final departure point from this land.

You can now continue your journey of discovery at your leisure in the Footprints of Kupe Interactive Gallery, where digital stations reveal more details of our ancestor’s story.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Manea: Footprints of Kupe was developed from a vision had by local Kaumātua (senior tribal Elders) for preserving their heritage and sharing it with the world. Te Hua o Te Kawariki Trust has developed and runs the Manea centre. It is a charitable trust representing a group of local marae and all profits are returned for community projects.  We love this, and this captures the amazing power of tourism to bring income and jobs and community benefits to a community, preserve and educate about other cultures and send people away with a greater understanding of the world we live in. What's not to love about this.

A bit about what you can do on Waiheke?

  • Vineyards - Home to more than 30 boutique vineyards, Waiheke has become known as New Zealand’s island of wine. Winegrowers on the island have successfully matched the maritime climate and ancient soil structures to produce some of New Zealand's best wines. Oneroa Bay and Little Oneroa sit side-by-side, and are within walking distance of the main village. Little Oneroa is a perfect place to spend the day, with BBQs, a children’s playground and a sprawling grassy area. • Public transport is available across the island and most services connect with ferry arrival and departure times.
  • Or hit the pedals and explore Waiheke Island on a mountain bike or e-bike. Cycle to cafés, past vineyards, or on rugged coastal tracks.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

A trip to Waiheke Island is one of the most popular Chuffed Gift redemptions. It's one of those places that many people think I'll go there 'one day'. So we are thrilled Fullers was keen to work with Chuffed so we could gift people the reason to make 'one day' possible because of their Chuffed Gift. Chuffed Gifts offer a number of experiences on Waiheke Island. Our most popular are lunch at Batch Winery, Ziplining at EcoZip, Scenic Flights with Auckland Seaplanes and the Waiheke Island Hop on Hop Off Bus.

A very special wildlife adventure to a private penguin viewing location.

Take a comfortable tour onboard a coach and witness spectacular coastal views as you cross the Reid family farm to the breeding habitat of Yellow-eyed Penguins, Blue penguins, and New Zealand Fur Seals. Enjoy up close and personal encounters with nature through custom build viewing locations. This tour suits all ages, and a low level of fitness is required.

It is a real experience, owned by real people. Wildlife is living in natural environments the way nature intended it to be. The team at Natures Wonders don't feed the wildlife, and the wildlife is not subjected to tagging, handling or any form of testing. This is as real as it gets when it comes to wildlife habitats.

The Yellow Eyed and Blue Penguins are a great example as they freely go about their lives on Penguin Beach. There is a common perception that penguins only go out to sea early in the morning and only return at dusk. This is not the case on Penguin Beach where the undisturbed penguins are seen throughout the day as they come and go and get on with their daily lives.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Perry, Tracey and Martin Reid made a choice: To restore the natural landscape in their corner of the world for future generations. The Reid family believe that if you want something to survive, to thrive, you need to give it a hand up and nothing deserves this protection more than New Zealand’s globally significant and unique flora and fauna. The Reids are true Kiwis, and they pour 100% into their role as guardians of the Otago headland and the thousands of animals that call it home.

This experience gives you & a friend access to the Knights of the Sky' and the Dangerous Skies' exhibits at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Center.

Knights of the Sky features Sir Peter Jackson's collection of WW1 aircraft and artefacts, and in true Peter Jackson fashion, thousands of hours have gone into the displays around each aircraft, many of which depict events that took place during the war. Visit Sir Peter Jackson’s Knights of the Sky Exhibition and travel to a time when the harshness and cruelty of the war in the trenches contrasted with the chivalry and bravado of the war in the air.

Dangerous Skies is a display of WW2 craft, with some infamous warbirds on display, again in cinematic quality scenes, including an impression Lockheed Hudson plane accurately recreated to appear crashed in the depths of a jungle, as the plane was during the war! Like World War One’s Knights of the Sky, Dangerous Skies features mannequins made by Weta Workshop, and original, flyable static aircraft in larger-than-life dioramas, capturing specific snapshots in history.

This is an incredible experience for Aviation Buffs and non Buffs alike!

Why is it Chuffed Worthy?

We paid a visit to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Museum and were lucky enough to be guided through these two incredible exhibits. It is fair to say the aircraft & displays are on par or above some of the famous museum exhibits that Weta Workshop have had involvement in, but possibly on a far less known scale. If you want to see this mastery without the crowds, this is a great option!

Taupo’s Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings are possibly the largest of their type in the world and are a must-see attraction, only accessible by boat. Sail Barbary has been offering cruises to these carvings since 1982.

In 2010 they started the journey to being 100% sustainable. To create a real difference to their customers they converted from a noisy smelly diesel engine to an electric motor. So sit back and relax as you are taken through their journey along with commentary on the eco side of the lake, living within a Volcano and the cultural significance of the Maori Rock carvings.

The whole experience is both unique and authentic. Being at the carvings with no noise or smell is perfect!

Sail Barbary takes you right up close to the 14-meter high rock art. You’re guaranteed amazing photo opportunities as you experience one of life’s postcard moments. You can even BYO (Bring Your Own) food and beverages. Things really couldn’t get more Kiwi!

Soak up the sun or roll up your sleeves; you can take the wheel, help hoist the sails or just sit back and enjoy the view.  Sail Barbary is equipped for all conditions; if the wind dies down, Sail Barbary‘s eco-friendly electric engine kicks in, moving noiselessly through the water. When the wind is up, you can enjoy sailing without salty sea-spray and noisy outboard motors. Warm ponchos are supplied. Swimming is encouraged.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

We just love Sail Barbary's commitment to sustainability and a totally authentic experience. The carvings are definitely an attraction all Kiwi's should see once in their life but sailing there or by electric motor is the way to do it - no sound, no pollution - just silence. And the location really does justify that! Definitely an attraction Chuffed had to have onboard and it has proved to be popular as one of the favorites amongst Chuffed Gift recipients.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy

James from Chuffed visited Secret Spot with his family on the very first day they opened in 2019. It was obvious it was going to be a incredible success, and now on a subsequent visit in 2022, the phenomenal growth of the ferns and trees onsite have evolved Secret Spot into a destination with no peer. What is obvious is that the owners' (Brothers Keith and Eric) vision has played out.

Because of it's location at Waipa entrance to the Redwoods Mountain Bike Park it allows for a amazing day out - riding the trails and then hot tubs to finish it off!

Experience Provider: Stargazers BnB

Nestled in a protected valley in Kuaotunu 16km north of Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula, Stargazers offers an ideal dark sky site to observe the stunning New Zealand southern night sky in all its dark sky glory with a range of optical tools.

This astronomy tour provides a comprehensive introduction to the NZ southern night sky. Commencing on a elevated stargazing observation deck you will learn to recognise several constellations and bright stars using a green laser pointer.  Then, use the walk-in Pipehenge observing frame to learn how the stars and planets move in the sky and how the great New Zealand Maori and Polynesian voyagers used them for navigation across the Pacific Ocean.

You will continue with the professional 14" Celestron CGE Pro 1400XLT telescope in the rotating 3.5m (11') astronomy dome. View a range of objects including the moon, stars, planets and galaxies depending on availability on the night of your visit. Children can operate the dome rotation during the astronomy tour to give a clear view of the NZ sky.

Back at reception you will have ample time to examine and handle several 4½ billion year old meteorites and learn about the history of the classic Spitz A2 planetarium projector currently undergoing restoration and how it is used. There are several unique hands-on displays about things astronomical, geological and scientific including 150 million year old dinosaur bones. The astronomy tour concludes with a walk through a 25m scale model of the Solar System.

A hot drink is provided while stargazing to ward off the evening chill and a detailed information pack including a sundial kit is supplied to enable you to further your astronomy interests at home!

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

On our first recruitment road trip around the Coromandel, we found Stargazers BnB just beyond the peninsulas traditional holidaymaker route. What we really found was a husband & wife passion project, so authentic & unique that it couldn't be ignored! No wonder it has proven so popular with Chuffed customers to date!
