Penguin Express Tour

A very special wildlife adventure to a private penguin viewing location.

Take a comfortable tour onboard a coach and witness spectacular coastal views as you cross the Reid family farm to the breeding habitat of Yellow-eyed Penguins, Blue penguins, and New Zealand Fur Seals. Enjoy up close and personal encounters with nature through custom build viewing locations . This tour suits all ages, and a low level of fitness is required.

It is a real experience, owned by real people. Wildlife is living in natural environments the way nature intended it to be. The team at Natures Wonders don’t feed the wildlife, and the wildlife is not subjected to tagging, handling or any form of testing. This is as real as it gets when it comes to wildlife habitats.

The Yellow Eyed and Blue Penguins are a great example as they freely go about their lives on Penguin Beach. There is a common perception that penguins only go out to sea early in the morning and only return at dusk. This is not the case on Penguin Beach where the undisturbed penguins are seen throughout the day as they come and go and get on with their daily lives.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Perry, Tracey and Martin Reid made a choice: To restore the natural landscape in their corner of the world for future generations. The Reid family believe that if you want something to survive, to thrive, you need to give it a hand up and nothing deserves this protection more than New Zealand’s globally significant and unique flora and fauna. The Reids are true Kiwis, and they pour 100% into their role as guardians of the Otago headland and the thousands of animals that call it home

Adults (13+) and juniors (7 – 12 years old) race separately. Juniors race up to 10 laps.

You might want to consider the other activities Game Over offers to enjoy a longer family excursion – Laser Tag and Miniputt.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Went we were seeking partners for Chuffed we were talking with the operators of Hampton Downs Racetrack. They offer a variety of track experiences including go karts and supercar racing. They actually suggested we look at Game Over as a softer indoor version for families, for those short of time, or those just wanting a softer introduction to a track experience than a full on outdoor racetrack experience. We took their advice, took a look and like what we saw.

Ancient Forest Guided Tour

Join a knowledgeable and engaging guides on easy, gently graded walking tracks. They’ll help you spot North Island robins, tomtits, kākā, tūī, bellbirds, hihi, tieke, fantails, kererū and wētā. They’ll introduce you to some of our local plants and trees and share stories about the history of this ambitious conservation project.

You’ll learn about the translocation programs that recently introduced kōkako and rifleman to a forest where they can thrive. Sanctuary Mountain® is now home to an estimated population of over 1000 kiwi.

This leisurely paced tour takes place in striking pest-free native forest dominated by towering tawa, rewarewa, pukatea, rimu and a wide variety of characteristic ferns. You will stand at the foot of a mature northern rata in the heart of the sanctuary and see the coalesced mass of roots that form the trunks of these magnificent trees.

You’ll listen to the birdsong, take in the majesty of our indigenous forest and try to spot the numerous bird species that call the maunga their home. Spend time in the clearing where cheeky New Zealand forest parrots – the kākā – like to hang out then take an optional walk up the viewing tower for a unique perspective of the forest canopy from above.

These tours are generally with small groups. At the end of your tour, your guide can provide you with ideas of where in the forest to explore next, depending on your interests, or you may want to wander back for a cuppa at the Visitors Centre or bring your own snacks to sit and contemplate the beautiful ngahere.

By booking on this tour your contribution helps Sanctuary Mountain® continue to protect the rare and endangered species that live wild on Maungatautari. A complimentary Sanctuary Explorer Pass is included and we invite you to continue exploring the forest at the end of the tour.

Since the Art Deco Trust began showing the city’s Art Deco treasures to tourists in 1985, thousands of people each year have experienced Napier’s fascinating heritage and have been captivated by the dramatic story of the city’s rebirth in the vibrant 1930s.

In February 1931, Napier was levelled by earthquake and fire but was rebuilt in the depths of the Great Depression in just two years.  Nowhere else in the world can you see such a concentration of buildings in the styles of the 1930s: Art Deco, Spanish Mission and Stripped Classical.

On this easy going walking tour, you’ll hear the story of the earthquake that devastated Napier in 1931 and be introduced to the Art Deco style and hear stories of the characters involved in rebuilding this city.

This tour includes a complimentary viewing of a 20 minute earthquake movie “The Day that Changed the Bay” at the Hawkes Bay Museum

Why is it Chuffed Worthy?

Many people aren’t aware of Napier’s Art Deco Heritage or the story of why it came about. Alex from Chuffed has experienced a tour with the team at Art Deco Trust and was blown away by the insights & history shared. If you are looking for a unique, informative & entertaining walking tour, this is it!

Footprints of Kupe Experience

In the footprints of Kupe experience

Located in  Opononi, on the edge of the edge of the Hokianga Harbour is this very interesting cultural attraction.

According to some tribal narratives, Kupe was the first Polynesian to discover the islands of New Zealand. Hokianga is uniquely associated with Kupe as the place he secured for his descendants before leaving on his return voyage to our ancient place of origin in the eastern Pacific. Within a generation those descendants, returned to these Hokianga shores. These events and histories are the foundation of local tribal identity.

Manea: Footprints of Kupe was developed from a vision had by local Kaumātua (senior tribal Elders) for preserving their heritage and sharing it with the world.

The actual experience is a 75-minute multisensory journey of guided storytelling – through art, taonga (cultural treasures), film, performance, digital interaction and the splendour of Hokianga’s natural surroundings.

It is split into 3 parts:

Whakapapa / Connect

Meet your guide and begin your journey in the footsteps of Kupe, with descendants of Kupe

Engage in stories about their ancestors and the ancient realms of Kupe, told through carvings and the surrounding land. Deepen your understanding of Māori customs and the dynamic connections to the natural and spiritual world.

Ruku / Immerse

On your arrival at the Manea whare taonga (house of treasures), you are welcomed with the timeless cultural ceremony of pōwhiri.

You now enter the Manea theatre, where a 20-minute 4D-digital extravaganza and live performance immerses you in a full sensory recreation of the rich and vibrant world of the intrepid adventures of Kupe.

You appreciate in a new way the extraordinary feats of  ocean voyaging.

Toro / Interact

From the theatre, your guide will lead you outside to absorb the full significance of the Hokianga harbour and it’s connection.

This was not only where Kupe made his home, but also his final departure point from this land.

You can now continue your journey of discovery at your leisure in the Footprints of Kupe Interactive Gallery, where digital stations reveal more details of our ancestor’s story.

Why is this Chuffed Worthy?

Manea: Footprints of Kupe was developed from a vision had by local Kaumātua (senior tribal Elders) for preserving their heritage and sharing it with the world. Te Hua o Te Kawariki Trust has developed and runs the Manea centre. It is a charitable trust representing a group of local marae and all profits are returned for community projects.  We love this, and this captures the amazing power of tourism to bring income and jobs and community benefits to a community, preserve and educate about other cultures and send people away with a greater understanding of the world we live in. What’s not to love about this.
