Pass through tunnels (headlights provided!) and over bridges, while checking out information boards detailing the enormous task of constructing the old fell railway system. Reach the summit - a large grassy plateau perfect for a picnic or cold drink - then enjoy a fun (but easily controllable!) descent to Cross Creek for a 2pm pickup or Featherston for a 2.15pm pickup, from where the shuttle will take you back to Kaitoke.

Ultimate Zipline Experience
TripAdvisor declared Rotorua Canopy Tour's Ultimate Experience the 11th best experience in the WORLD in 2021. That's pretty high praise!
You need to allow yourself 3.5 hours to experience this activity which is surprisingly suitable for almost everyone.
After meeting at their base on the outskirts of Rotorua where you meet you guides who ooze professionalism and fun times, you'll be transported up to a magical forest that appears to have been lost in time. You'll immediately be struck with how you feel as you are transported to another world full of amazing trees, ferns, smells and noise.
Perhaps the most impressive feat by the team at Canopy Tours is over the past 10 years they have removed all the possums and rats from this once unloved and forgotten slice of New Zealand forest and restored it to a pest free environment - so much so that you can spot many bird species and in an amazing highlight of the expereince, even handfeed wild robins.
The experience consists of 6 ziplines for a total of 1.2 kilometres. They vary from shooting you through tight gaps in the forest layer to giant swooping flights through deep forested valleys. There is even a 400 metre tandem line so you can race you partner....but this tour is so much more than an adreneline rush.
In addition there are a number of suspended bridges that span wide valleys, floating staircases and one of the highlights - the 50 metre high cliff walk - that appears seemingly out of no where as you arrive perched high on it after a zipline flight out of the forest canopy.
It's a truly special experience, suitable for anyone with a okay level of fitness. It operates in all weather but does suspend operations when high winds exist.

Canyoning is one of the newer Abel Tasman activities. It is a combination of lots of fun stuff all bunched into one exciting activity. Trips normally start with a walk through beautiful scenery. Then it’s time to get the rubber suits on and start making your way down the canyon. We jump off cliffs into deep pools below, slide down water polished chutes and abseil besides or sometimes even through showering waterfalls. Most of the time you’ll be surrounded by steep walls covered in moss and ferns. And of course your guides will make sure you know exactly what to do. Going on a trip is the only way anyone can get to see these stunning places and experience all the fun stuff Mother Nature throws at you.

Experience a Tandem Skydive from 10,000 feet in the air with the most astonishing views of the South Island amongst mountains, glaciers, lakes, rivers and ocean views.
Skydive Franz & Fox has New Zealand’s highest mountain Aoraki/Mount Cook and the biggest glaciers Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers immediately on the right and the wide blue ocean on the left. On this spectacular skydive you'll see mountains, the Tasman Sea, glowing glaciers, mirror lakes and braided river beds - Franz Josef Glacier has been described as one of the most beautiful place on earth!
Tandem skydiving is the fastest, easiest and safest way for an inexperienced skydiver to enjoy the thrill of jumping out of a plane, free falling through the sky at 200kph/120mph and floating safely to the ground under a parachute. The system includes a harness and parachute system for both the passenger and the instructor to share, so you can simply enjoy the thrill of the experience knowing your instructor has everything under control.
You will experience a huge rush leaving the aircraft – but just as quickly notice that the sensation of the roaring wind below you actually cushions you as you travel speeds of 200kph (120mph). Then wow – the rush turns to extraordinary peace when your parachute opens, and you gently drift over the South Island with breathtakingly beautiful mountainous views. At this point, you’ll either be stunned to silence or screaming for joy! It’s an indescribable feeling that you will never forget. You won't be able to wipe the smile off your face!
The 10,000ft skydive is best suited for those wanting a shorter experience or it is also a great place to start for those who are under 18 due to the less pressure changes.
- Up to 30 seconds freefall!
- 10 minute flight to altitude
- 3-4 minute flight under canopy
- Amazing views of Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers

On the way down, immense cliffs cradle the river canyon. It is in one of these sections that you stop and have a picnic lunch. From there it is a relaxing float out to the take out, followed by a scenic drive back to River Valley Lodge where you began.
The guides will ensure that you are equipped with appropriate equipment, both to keep you warm, and to keep you out of harm.
Depending on the day this could include, wetsuits or specially designed bib style splash pants, neoprene boots and lifejackets. Helmets are always worn.
Total time on the actual river depends on flow, but is generally between 3 and a half to 4 hours. You will stop for lunch along the way. Please allow for a full day, with a meeting time of 9.30am at River Valley Lodge.
Why is this Chuffed Worthy?
Chuffed just love working with the the backbone of New Zealand's visitor economy - the small, family owned & operated business built on a passion for people & place. Few businesses embody this idea more than River Valley, a family farm near Taihape, which currently has four generations of family involved in the running of the property & business.
