Hike and Bike Coromandel Experience Provider: Hike and Bike Coromandel
Experience the beautiful Coromandel Coastal Walkway, an old bridle path once used by early Maori and European Settlers to link east with west at the tip of the remote Northern Coromandel Peninsula.
Check In 8.20 a.m. Meet at Hike & Bike Coromandel, 105 Wharf Road, Coromandel Town, where complimentary, off-street parking is available. Local Accommodation pickups are available by prior arrangement.
Depart 8.30 a.m. We strike out through the historic town of Coromandel with its heritage buildings and gold mining stories from days gone by. We’ll point out the iconic Kauri Tree, once decimated by early Settlers for timber, to now being re-established by teams of enthusiastic locals. A little further north we pass through sleepy, coastal villages with views across the island studded Hauraki Gulf. Admire the large scale Hereford Beef Studs and the contrasting Tibetan Retreat, Mahamudra with its Stupa, glinting proudly in the morning sun.
Approx 9.05 a.m: We pause in the laidback town of Colville with its art galleries, a co-operative style general store and Hereford N a Pickle Café, famous for its home grown meats, pickles and burgers. As the road travels inland we catch glimpses of Mount Moehau with its regenerating forests, home to New Zealand’s Brown Kiwi. We recall the efforts of local volunteers to rid the area of pests to ensure the repopulation and future of this shy bird. There is the chance of a tea break at Tangiaro Kiwi Retreat, located at the base of a bushclad valley just on the outskirts of Port Charles (seasonal hours apply/own cost).
Approx 10.30 a.m. The Walkway starts with a gradual climb from Stony Bay, as it threads its way through regenerating native bush complete with birdsong, mountain streams and rockpools. Photo opportunities abound along the way with panoramic sea vistas from Sugarloaf, over the Colville Channel to Great Barrier Island and beyond.
Enjoy lunch at the Lookout with its impressive panoramic views or rest on the heritage seat further on and soak up the blissful peace. The Walkway concludes with a leisurely downhill section through an impressive beef and sheep farm on the way to Fletcher Bay. Keen walkers are most welcome to tackle the 3km Muriwai Walk, a stunning hike along the cliff tops and out along the spreading sands of Port Jackson beach. Here we take a short break for afternoon tea with enough time to enjoy a refreshing swim.
Approx 4.30 p.m. Rejoin the minibus as it continues along the pohutukawa lined coast beside the Hauraki Gulf, playground for fishermen, adventure seekers and holidaymakers. Keep an eye out for dolphins and orca which sometimes frolic just metres from the thin ribbon of road. We pass back through Colville around 5pm before concluding your day in Coromandel Town at approximately 6pm.

Whale Watch Kaikoura Experience Provider: Whale Watch Kaikoura
Whale Watch is New Zealand's only vessel based whale watching company offering an exciting up-close encounter with the world's largest toothed predator the Giant Sperm Whale. See the whales in their natural environment at all times of the year, boasting a 95% success rate!
The main focus of your tour is to locate and view the Giant Sperm Whale. Whale Watch average between 1 to 2 whale sightings per tour due to the length of time the whales can stay submerged. The whales form loose pods, keeping several miles between each other, so viewing any more than 1 to 2 whales per trip is a real bonus.
Around 80% of the world’s whale and dolphin species migrate past our coastline so at any given time there is the opportunity for other species of marine mammals to be sighted such as Blue, Fin, Sei, Humpback, Minke, Pilot, Orca and Southern Right Whales, Common Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Southern Right Whale Dolphins, Elephant Seals and Leopard Seals.
Depending on the amount of time available after viewing the Sperm Whales, the captain of the vessel may decide to move in along the coastline and see what other types of marine life can be encountered. This could include Dusky and Hector Dolphins and the New Zealand Fur Seal.
Kaikōura is also home to around 75% of the world’s pelagic sea bird species which include Wandering and Royal Albatross, Mollymawk Albatross, Petrels, Shearwaters, Prions, Fulmars, Gannets, Terns and Herons.
Throughout your tour there is an onboard visual presentation, “World of the Whales” – an experience that takes passengers “virtually” to the bottom of the Kaikōura undersea canyon. The presentation also provides information for a variety of marine life found in Kaikōura waters.
Designed specially for whale watching, the modern catamarans are equipped with engines that minimise underwater noise and toilets that never pollute the sea. The main passenger cabin is enclosed and large outside decks offer great viewing and photo opportunities. Passenger numbers for each tour are kept well below vessel carrying capacity to ensure your tour experience remains a personal one.

The Footprints of Kupe Experience
$149 NZD
A magnificent 75 minute multisensory journey of guided storytelling of Kupe who landed at Hokianga Harbour 950 years ago.
Click to find out more Experience Provider: Manea Footprints of Kupe
Located in Opononi, on the edge of the edge of the Hokianga Harbour is this very interesting cultural attraction.
According to some tribal narratives, Kupe was the first Polynesian to discover the islands of New Zealand. Hokianga is uniquely associated with Kupe as the place he secured for his descendants before leaving on his return voyage to our ancient place of origin in the eastern Pacific. Within a generation those descendants, returned to these Hokianga shores. These events and histories are the foundation of local tribal identity.
Manea: Footprints of Kupe was developed from a vision had by local Kaumātua (senior tribal Elders) for preserving their heritage and sharing it with the world.
The actual experience is a 75-minute multisensory journey of guided storytelling – through art, taonga (cultural treasures), film, performance, digital interaction and the splendor of Hokianga’s natural surroundings.
It is split into 3 parts:
Whakapapa / Connect
Meet your guide and begin your journey in the footsteps of Kupe, with descendants of Kupe.
Engage in stories about their ancestors and the ancient realms of Kupe, told through carvings and the surrounding land. Deepen your understanding of Māori customs and the dynamic connections to the natural and spiritual world.
Ruku / Immerse
On your arrival at the Manea whare taonga (house of treasures), you are welcomed with the timeless cultural ceremony of pōwhiri.
You now enter the Manea theatre, where a 20-minute 4D-digital extravaganza and live performance immerses you in a full sensory recreation of the rich and vibrant world of the intrepid adventures of Kupe.
You appreciate in a new way the extraordinary feats of ocean voyaging.
Toro / Interact
From the theatre, your guide will lead you outside to absorb the full significance of the Hokianga harbour and it's connection.
This was not only where Kupe made his home, but also his final departure point from this land.
You can now continue your journey of discovery at your leisure in the Footprints of Kupe Interactive Gallery, where digital stations reveal more details of our ancestor’s story.
Why is this Chuffed Worthy?
Manea: Footprints of Kupe was developed from a vision had by local Kaumātua (senior tribal Elders) for preserving their heritage and sharing it with the world. Te Hua o Te Kawariki Trust has developed and runs the Manea centre. It is a charitable trust representing a group of local marae and all profits are returned for community projects. We love this, and this captures the amazing power of tourism to bring income and jobs and community benefits to a community, preserve and educate about other cultures and send people away with a greater understanding of the world we live in. What's not to love about this?
