The Hector’s dolphin are only found around the inshore waters of the South Island, with Akaroa Harbour and Bank’s Peninsula hosting the highest population in one area. They are easily spotted by their distinguishable rounded black dorsal fin which is shaped like a Mickey Mouse ear. They are classified as nationally endangered with a national population thought to be around 10,000. But over 1,000 call Akaroa and Bank’s Peninsula home.
You may even get to meet Akaroa Dolphin’s famous crew, the Dolphin spotting dogs, who play an important role in locating the Hector’s Dolphins each day. You’ll also enjoy a complimentary NZ Beer or Wine, and some delicious home baking along the way, this really is a luxurious way to spot some of the world’s rarest Dolphins!
As well as dolphins, you’ll see and get close to the dramatic coastline of Banks Peninsula, including sea caves, high cliffs, and volcanic rock formations.
